What are the City's leash laws?: No animals are allowed to "run at large." All animals, including both dogs and cats, must be kept under restraint at all times. Restraint is defined as on a leash or otherwise physically controlled by a human when it is not on the owner's property or other property by permission. Pet owners are encouraged to keep their pets on their own property by using suitable fencing, kennels, pens, well-secured leashes or chains.

1. How do I contact Animal Control?: The City contracts with American Boarding Kennels (1102 Highway 13 E., Burnsville) for animal control issues. If you have questions on animal control issues or to report a stray cat or dog problem, please contact American Boarding Kennels at 952-894-DOGS (3647).

2. What do I do if my pet has been impounded?: Impounded pets are available for pick-up at American Boarding Kennels Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

4. What should I do about pet nuisances?: Owners are required to prevent their animals from being a nuisance to others. This includes both dogs and cats. A nuisance can be habitual or frequent animal noises such as barking, crying or howling, fighting with other animals, killing wildlife, or damaging or destroying public or private property. 5. What should I do if my pet is lost?: When you license your pet, your contact information is kept on file with the licensor, allowing them to contact you if your pet is taken to an animal care facility. If your pet is lost you can notify the licensor.
